Democracy doesn’t mean you get everything you want. It means you get many of the things you want and all of the things the many want.

Our Democracy is in Crisis. Here’s How We Fix It.

Americans are watching democracy slip away. That’s no exaggeration.

Why? Donald Trump? Elon Musk? Project 2025? Those are threats, and they have to be stopped, but they aren’t the root cause of why this is happening. The deeper issue is that our Constitution lacks the democratic guardrails needed to deal with these threats and protect democracy. Our government depends on a system of checks and balances, and that system is one the verge of failing. If it does, American democracy dies, the American experiment ends, and autocracy takes its place.

The path forward? It’s a surprisingly simple path. We must stop the immediate damage that enemies within our government are doing to our democracy, and then we must fix the Constitution so this never happens again. Not easy—but simple, straightforward.

What is Democracy Bill of Rights?

Democracy Bill of Rights is a group of patriotic Americans dedicated to strengthening American democracy by proposing and sharing ideas for constitutional amendments to safeguard American democracy and improve our system of government.

Like the original Bill of Rights, we propose several democratic amendments—a Democracy Bill of Rights. All of the amendment proposals on Democracy Bill of Rights are important, but the most important, by far, is the first one: The Citizen-Led Amendment Pathway. If passed, a Citizen-Let Amendment Pathway would give the people—not politicians—the power to amend the Constitution, making the American People a check on all three branches of government. The Citizen-Led Amendment Pathway amendment is the key amendment we need, the Holy Grail if you will, to protect and improve American democracy forever.

The Challenges We Face

The U.S. Constitution is arguably the hardest in the world to amend. Most countries frequently amend their constitutions. When constitutions cannot be amended, problems go unresolved and polarization builds. Many democracies allow citizens to vote directly on constitutional changes. That’s not the case here. The U.S. amendment process relies entirely on politicians, both in Congress and in state legislatures. That’s the first challenge. The second challenge is how extremely high the threshold to amend the Constitution is. Article V of the Constitution requires two-thirds of both the House and Senate to approve an amendment. After an amendment is approved by Congress, three-quarters of state legislatures must ratify it. This makes the U.S. Constitution far too difficult to change, even when the majority of Americans support reforms. It’s the single biggest reason we are at risk of losing our democracy today.

The Only Solution

Think of this crisis in two phases:

Stopping threats like Trump, Musk, and Project 2025 is the immediate priority—but that’s just the first step. To truly reverse authoritarianism and restore American democracy, we need to add the Citizen-Led Amendment Pathway to the Constitution. We know this won’t be easy. Defeating authoritarian forces and fixing our broken system will require mass organizing and sustained protests on an unprecedented scale. This isn’t a fight that will be won in months—it will take years.

History proves that real change takes ongoing pressure and time. The Civil Rights Movement saw over a decade of protests, from the mid-1950s to the late 1960s. The fight for Indian independence, led by Mahatma Gandhi, stretched across decades, culminating in 1947.

Defeating Trump won’t be the end of this struggle. The far right has systematically eroded our democratic institutions, and the damage won’t disappear, even if Trump is gone. Our system was broken and vulnerable to these threats long before Trump. Trump and the Project 2025 architects took advantage of those weaknesses. Going back to the pre-Trump era isn’t enough. We must rebuild and strengthen democracy to prevent authoritarianism from taking hold again.

What we do today will determine whether future generations inherit an authoritarian dystopia or a thriving democracy. We allowed this happen. Now we must fix it.

Nothing worth fighting for is ever easy. Throughout history, crisis has been the catalyst for change. When systems break, people rise. And right now, democracy itself is on the line.

The fight for our future starts today. Will you stand with us?
